So I've been trying to get a tunnel working. A normal tunnel.
Let me explain the situation first. I'm on a wireless network, and the IPs are assigned through the DHCP server (the router, which is connected to the modem). The computer that I'm trying to get the tunnel working on, is running Windows 7.
I've been trying to use the following command:
netsh interface ipv6 add v6v4tunnel IP6Tunnel <local ip> <server ip>
However, the CMD prompt keeps saying "Element not found". Simply that, nothing else.
Anyone who has encountered the error and managed to solve it?
Thank you in advance.
hmm, that command works for me.
Maybe try repairing IPv6?
netsh int ipv6 reset
I'm assuming you're running the command prompt with admin rights?

CMD prompt is being ran as admin.
The reset gave the following message:
There's no user specified settings to be reset.
Maybe that command doesn't work in vista. Hmm. Can you post the output of "ipconfig /all" ?
So the first question is, are you behind nat or a firewall, or is your win7 machine actually assigned your IPv4 endpoint?
The "element not found" error seems to be a generic one in Windows 7. I was looking around Google for some help, and I've seen people report that the error has popped up when they were running a "bootrec /fixmbr" and also when someone was trying to adjust the resolution on their monitor via the control panel.
I guess what I'm saying is the error isn't helping us diagnose...hopefully someone else will run across this who's had the problem and be able to help.
When I get back to work on Monday I'll fire up my VM and see if I can find anything more out for you.
From http://www.computerperformance.co.uk/Longhorn/ipv6.htm
QuoteIf you get an 'Element not found' error message, then it's because your interface = NAME is wrong. The solution is to check the NAME in the Network Connections.
A co-worker and I had the same problem. We had to make a change to a registry key and then reboot to get the tunnel to create.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip6\Parameters\DisabledComponents
Normally, the DisabledComponents value does not exist. If the value does not exist or the value data is 0, IPv6 is enabled on all interfaces.
On mine this was set to a non-zero value so I changed it to zero and then rebooted. After that I was able to create the tunnel and IPv6 was functioning great.
Ive made it work on my own vista machine and can see the ipv6 google page etc. When I tried my brothers computer with windows 7 installed I couldnt get it to work. Im thinking whats wrong is that I used the same Example OS Configurations (vista/2008) cmd lines on his computer, since I couldnt find any configurations for windows 7. I didnt get any error msg when typing the lines in cmd though and both mine and his use a local ipv4 address from dhcp.
Is there some windows 7 Example OS Configurations cmd lines out there someone can post or anyone have any suggestions of what Im doing wrong ??
are you getting any error messages? can you post the output of ipconfig /all and your routing tables? the vista commands have worked on 7 for me so far
This is after I wrote those 3 cmd lines.

First, I would disable Teredo.
Second, you never said if you were getting any error messages.
What commands are you trying to run?
netsh interface ipv6 add v6v4tunnel IP6Tunnel 10.0.0.1 <server ip>
netsh interface ipv6 add address IP6Tunnel <string>
netsh interface ipv6 add route ::/0 IP6Tunnel <string>
I added those on my brothers computer and didnt get any error msg entering them in cmd. Its when I try to connect to ipv6 google and try to connect to some servers that requires ipv6 that it dosent work. I can try to disable terado next time Im at his computer, anything else I should look at ?
QuoteIts when I try to connect to ipv6 google and try to connect to some servers that requires ipv6 that it dosent work
Because you don't have an IPv6 address on your Local Area Connection interface.
To disable Teredo
netsh int teredo set state disabled
I disabled terado, but still no luck.
Is there a way to remove all the netsh lines Ive entered ? I get duplicate error msg when I try to change ipv4 on this line :
netsh interface ipv6 add v6v4tunnel IP6Tunnel 10.0.0.1 <server ip>
netsh int ipv6 delete followed by whatever you added before
I think there's a reset subcommand for most of the netsh sections.
Hello,
I am also running into the same problem and I would appreciate your help getting my IPv6 tunnel working in Windows 7. I have tried to copy/paste the commands listed when I created the tunnel and I cannot establish a link to IPv6 sites.
Could someone please provide me with steps to configure my IPv6 tunnel?
Thanks,
D
What commands are you using? Are you running them as an administrator? Are you getting any errors?
Can you post the output of "ipconfig /all" and "netstat -nr" ?

Do you also have access through Hexago? I'd remove that and try again, your routing table has multiple prefix's in it, and while it shouldn't matter, we should make things as simple as possible for the time being.
Hi,
Thanks for your post. I have removed the Hexago client and the problem persists. Would you like my me to repost my settings?

And when you run the netsh commands, you use 192.168.1.2 as your local IPv4 address instead of what the example will provide using your IPv4 endpoint?
Hello,
Here is the command I am running...
netsh interface ipv6 add v6v4tunnel IP6Tunnel xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx 216.66.38.58
netsh interface ipv6 add address IP6Tunnel 2001:470:1c:1be::2
netsh interface ipv6 add route ::/0 IP6Tunnel 2001:470:1c:1be::1 metric=5
netsh interface ipv6 set route 2001:470:1c:1be::2/64 IP6Tunnel metric=4
Where XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX is the WAN IP
Thanks,
D
And is that WAN IP configured on your machine?
Going to say no here since you provided ipconfig data which shows that 192.168.1.2 is.
Run the netsh command with that instead of the WAN IP.
Thank you for your assistance. After setting the "WAN IP" to 192.168.1.2 all functionality was restored.
Please note I had to delete my existing IPv6Tunnel using the netsh delete before adding the proper netsh command with 192.168.1.2
Is there a way to automatically update the WAN IP on the website everytime my IP changes?
OK, I think I really hosed things up.
Trying to reset all my IPv6 setting to defaults, but I'm not having much luck with the netsh reset command. Now when I try to go back through the setup steps, I get this error:
C:\Windows\system32>netsh interface ipv6 add v6v4tunnel IP6Tunnel xx.xx.xx.xx yy.yy.yy.yy
You were not connected because a duplicate name exists on the network. If joinin
g a domain, go to System in Control Panel to change the computer name and try ag
ain. If joining a workgroup, choose another workgroup name.
How can I get everything back to the way it was so I can try again?
Have you seen these threads?
http://www.tunnelbroker.net/forums/index.php?topic=793.0
http://www.tunnelbroker.net/forums/index.php?topic=438.0
Supposedly you can do a reset like so
netsh interface ipv6 reset
At this point, no netsh commands work without generating the "duplicate name exists" error. I'm not even too sure what this error refers to, despite some rather extensive googling.
If I could just get past the "duplicate name exists" crap, I'd be on my way to trying this again.
http://www.dslreports.com/forum/r23347380-Unable-to-connect-to-IPv6-Newsgroups~start=20
Do you get the error even when your try and remove your tunnel?
It's working, thanks for the assist!
ipconfig /all showed another tunnel adapter existed (I probably fat-fingered it when typing in the commands). "netsh interface ipv6 delete interface IPTunnel2" took care of the problem.
The lesson I took away from this is that "netsh interface ipv6 reset" does not actually reset anything back to the initial install. It appears to restore a few default settings, but previously-created tunnels are not removed.
Just came across another annoying issue that caused my tunnel to go down: At some point during a Windows update, the following registry entry was reset from "0" to "ff":
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\TCPIP6\Parameters\DisabledComponents
With this changed, all IPv6 interfaces were absent from ipconfig /all. In addition, running the following command produced the dreaded "Element not found" error:
netsh interface ipv6 add v6v4tunnel IP6Tunnel yy.yy.yy.yy xx.xx.xx.xx
Resetting the registry key above to "0" and rebooting got IPv6 working again.
Odd. I did updates all the time and never have this happen under XP. They've really broken this under 7?
EDIT: nevermind, it just started to work again - no idea why.
Hello guys, i seem to have a strange problem with my tunnel here:
Yesterday everything worked nicely, fast and stable - but today when i woke up IPv6 was dead (i never turn my PC off, so it cant be a issue related to a reboot)
Maybe someone can see the error in my ipconfig /all?
Beware: The Windows is German, i translated the text for you, so it could look "dumb" at some places.
What i tryed:
Remove IP6Tunnel and reiconfigure it - did not help at all.
