Title: Has PPTP died on tserv5.lon1?
Post by: Dragon2611 on January 25, 2011, 04:47:21 PM
As per the topic title, really Had a working PPTP session up with this server and it seems to have dropped and now refuses to reconnect.

The IPv6 tunnel does appear to still be working it's just PPTP that's no longer working.

Same question, about tserv15.lax1 as well.

Basically went like this:

Jan 25 17:34:53 deimos1 pppd[10584]: LCP terminated by peer (User request)
Jan 25 17:34:53 deimos1 pppd[10584]: Connect time 1066.4 minutes.
Jan 25 17:34:53 deimos1 pppd[10584]: Sent 27618854 bytes, received 5514539 bytes.
Jan 25 17:34:56 deimos1 pppd[10584]: Modem hangup
Jan 25 17:34:56 deimos1 pppd[10584]: Connection terminated.
Jan 25 17:34:56 deimos1 pppd[10584]: Using interface ppp0
Jan 25 17:34:56 deimos1 pppd[10584]: Connect: ppp0 <--> /dev/pts/1
Jan 25 17:35:02 deimos1 pppd[10584]: Modem hangup
Jan 25 17:35:02 deimos1 pppd[10584]: Connection terminated.
Jan 25 17:35:10 deimos1 pppd[10584]: Using interface ppp0
Jan 25 17:35:10 deimos1 pppd[10584]: Connect: ppp0 <--> /dev/pts/1
Jan 25 17:35:12 deimos1 pppd[10584]: Modem hangup
Jan 25 17:35:12 deimos1 pppd[10584]: Connection terminated.
...

:o

Just recently found out when trying to ping6 my home network. At least my server's tunnel (which has a dedicated IPv4 address) is working fine, as it doesn't need PPTP.

PPTP Beta was a beta, and was suspended a while ago (see http://www.tunnelbroker.net/forums/index.php?topic=942.msg6888#msg6888 ). Some of the pops needed reloads which probably killed off any remaining pptp connections.

I thought it was just suspended for new users, it was working if you already had it enabled on your account including setting up a new connection.

My router was last rebooted 10 Days ago so it's impossible for the PPTP session to have been up more than that  ;)

I'll kick what I see, but some are definitely staying off since they were causing issues on the pops (tserv11 & tserv3 been off for months now).

So the PPTPs are being shut down and it was just by chance they still worked?

Eventually it'll either resurface with improvements and possibly altogether different, or just go away. It was suspended because it caused some pretty serious instability on a few nodes, to the point of total lockup. Cannot have a Beta affect production services in that manner.

I can definitely understand and appreciate that. Just a sidenote, it appears to be back up.

Ok! I had also assumed that Beta was off for new users, as I was able to use PPTP even after the announcement. Thanks for the info! :)

Back up here, has been up since about 02:00 GMT

If HE/Tunnelbroker need to stop PPTP altogether then fair enough don't really have grounds to complain as after all it is a free service, but please if you do make the decision to kill existing PPTP tunnels can you please announce it so we know it's happening.

Was rather confusing to have PPTP suddenly just die and for the control panel to still show it's available on the Tunnel I'd originally set it up on.
