Title: Email Testing help!!
Post by: rromero on April 09, 2012, 12:35:20 PM
Hi,

I come with you because as stated before, all this "systems, DBs, Emails" engineer stuff is really new for me (Im more on routing, switching, IP Phones, and so).

Im having problems in configuring an email server for Windows 7 (yes, on laptop), I downloaded hMailServer, then I find out "I need a DB server!", I then did some research of what kind of SQL server software can be installed on my laptop, my idea: install a small software with small space (just for the space) on my laptop.

Then I found PostgreSQL would do the miracle but no, I did more research of "how to install a pg DB" (there is anything "for dummies" out there???), after some trying and configuring, I couldnt get the DB running, and of course the hMailServer is not working too.

Why hMailServer? I read it supports IPv6 and could be installed on Win 7.

My request: Im not lazy, Im very new at this, I dont own a server, only my laptop, if anyone can suggest me what sw or mail service I can work with, just point me and I will do the rest!!

Suggestions, comments will be very welcome!!

Best regards

Ramon romero

Where did you read that hMailServer needs a database?  I run it as a backup for my exchange server and didn't need to install any sort of database...it "just works"

Googled it, I think it was on a wiki page. Several systems were compared on a "matrix" table.

I dont have access to any Exchange server.  :(

I know others on here have used hMail for their tests and it's worked great

you can also use sendmail or any number of servers on linux.

Hi.

I thought I got my right configuration through hMailServer and then I run the test, first I got the error message "Didn't get expected welcome"

I read here and found something about entering new IP Ranges: I entered 2001::1 to 2001::ffff

I ran the test again, but stays on Step 3 "Schedule a test and we will email you your new User Code", the symbol go round and round... Whats wrong? Me?

Of course Im not receiving any e-mail.

On TCP/IP ports I added SMTP, POP3 and IMAP with IPv6 addressing: 2002:c999:5f33::c999:5f33 TCP/IP 25 for SMTP for example.

You're using an address out of your routed /64, correct?

Domains and real IP addresses will let us help you more

Hi.

Yes, I posted real addresses, and valid ones, I purchased my domain at godaddy.com, everything should be ok on that side!

Which post? Also did you randomly pick that range?

What email address was submitted?

That IP isn't currently available (since it is a laptop, I assume it is off or in a different location), but when it was online, it wasn't listening on port 25.

A post here at HE, http://www.tunnelbroker.net/forums/index.php?topic=545.msg6976#msg6976, I randomly pick that range indeed.

Thats the one Im using from my local config:
Tunnel adapter Reusable Microsoft 6To4 Adapter:

   Connection-specific DNS Suffix  . :
   IPv6 Address. . . . . . . . . . . : 2002:c999:5f33::c999:5f33
   Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 2002:c058:6301::c058:6301

Is there a way to test the SMTP port from here from my laptop? IPv4 or IPv6?

Also I have this config:

Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:

  Connection-specific DNS Suffix  . :
  Link-local IPv6 Address . . . . . : fe80::7cfa:cd25:ce7:5d31%11
  IPv4 Address. . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.102
  Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
  Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.254

And this for my direct connection to Internet (DSL router in bridge mode and also called my ISP, they do not block any ports):
PPP adapter Telmex PPPoE:

   Connection-specific DNS Suffix  . :
   IPv4 Address. . . . . . . . . . . : 201.153.95.51
   Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.255
   Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 0.0.0.0

Ok, answering myself. Win 7 does not support telnet, used Putty and confirmed port 25 is blocked. My ISP lied to me! I guess is because of the spam politics.

Im going to try the SMTP Relay, hope this works, but I have no idea of how to configure it, hope at godaddy have something to work with; hMailserver says "use your ISPs email server", I dont know if that is only configuration on godaddy or I have to pay something extra for.

Hope it works.

I'd venture a guess at the software still being misconfigured in some fashion. I doubt they filter SMTP for encapsulated traffic, which is IPv6 in nature.

HINT - if you can't connect locally, it isn't your ISP ;)

Also, you have 4 different IPv6 addresses in some sort of attempt at round-robin dns for your MX, one of which is a link-local which totally isn't going to be reachable for the global internet:

;ramon-romero.com.              IN      MX

Which is going to be more reliable? One MX record with multiple A and AAAA records, multiple MX records with one A or AAAA record each, or multiple MX records with one A and one AAAA record each?

Assuming the sending mail server is behaving properly all three should behave more or less the same, but multiple MX records gives a bit more control over which order the sending mail server will try the addresses.

But how the reliability is going to look if the sending mail server is not well behaved is harder to answer. Anybody got some actual experience with this?

Hi.

Respect with this issue, I deleted all IPv4 addressing on the mail server, start again and worked fine!

Thanks all for your comments, help and mainly, for your patience!!
