Why is the stockholm pop so frequently out of service?

Fiber cuts in Europe, something in Denmark this time. Maybe they should learn to drive backhoes better :(

But it happens frequently enough to hit 2+ hours outage minimum span per week.

Indeed. Perhaps more breathalyzer tests on backhoe drivers are needed over there.

ETR appears to be 45-60mins.

ETA until next backhoe takes out fiber in Europe is 5 bottles of cheap wine with anti-freeze.

LOL

Did this happen in Sweden?  Perhaps a maypole was pyle-driven into a fiber conduit?  :P

So how do you fix something like this?  Drop some sort of box in the ground and put the new connections inside that?

I've always wondered about that too.  I imagine they have to cut and clean the broken section of fiber, then fusion splice a new section in place.

Some vids showing fusion splicing:

And of course if the fiber is in a conduit, that's probably broken too and needs to be repaired or replaced.  From what I've seen, typically a conduit will have several cables of fiber containing bundles of many fibers.  Each one of these have to be cut back, cleaned, cleaved, and spliced individually.  Takes a bit of time to fix things I imagine.
