This is an update - in the hope it may be useful - concerning firewall versus configured tunnel in Windows XP (SP2+).

Previously I insisted on setting up the tunnel per the old method - inherited from Windows 2000 + MS IPv6 preview. It used the "automatic tunneling" interface (if number 2). That works fine, but, as I noted way back and discussed here on the forum notably with C.Holzhauser, is incompatible with the "Windows firewall".

Since I've had to change tunnels and redo the whole configuration, this time I was bold enough to try and do things "by the book" using the new, recommended, Windows XP method, viz :

> netsh interface ipv6 add v6v4tunnel

And lo and behold ! not only does the tunnel work as well as by the old method, this one is indeed compatible with the Windows firewall. The Windows FW still does not allow pings to the local tunnel end

Old mystery case closed. Note to self : do not clutch to deprecated methods  ;=)
