Clever IP addressing
« on: March 22, 2011, 12:20:56 PM »

So likely everyone has seen facebook's clever IP;

2620:0:1cfe:face:b00c::3

and I have seen a couple of :b00b:babe.

Sprint has won the prize for shortest and geekiest address to date (good IP to use on your cert testing, btw);

www.sprint.net.         3102    IN      AAAA    2600::

2600:: , who can forget that?  Phreaky  8)

Anyone got any other clever IPs I could use in my network??  :P

I remember that Sun boxes mark uninitialized memory as 0xDEADBEEF so you can see it in a dump.

A little bit of searching your local system's spelling dictionary would result in a lot of possibilities of varying usefulness (coffee, cafe babe, doodad, face, and food are probably useful, "fabaceae" less so :)

This works for me on a Mac, and should wok on most Unix systems as well:

Code: [Select]
#/usr/bin/ruby
File.readlines('/usr/share/dict/words').map {|l| l.rstrip.downcase}.find_all{|w| (w.split('').sort.uniq - ["a","b","c","d","e","f","o"]).size == 0 }.uniq.each{|w| puts w.gsub("o","0") if w.size > 1}

I don't remember where I saw this little code snippet, I think it was someone else here that posted it, kudos to whoever it was, it's certainly not my code. Ruby makes my spleen hurt. :)

Cheers,

Joe

Look up "spam.snarked.net" - I'm claiming the prize!

...And it even makes sense too!

I had 'feed:babe:dead:beef' at one time, just for grins.

@jgeorge:  I tried that code on my Snow Leopard Mac and it throws an error.  Unfortunately while I can hack my way through most scripting languages I'm at a loss here...

Code: [Select]
line 2: syntax error near unexpected token `'/usr/share/dict/words''

Copy and paste those 2 lines into a shell script and then run it:

vi /tmp/hexwords
(paste stuff into vi and save it)
chmod a+x /tmp/hexwords
/tmp/hexwords
....[output]

I was showing some IPv6 configs for a thesis project and I accidentally showed:

Code: [Select]
dead:deaf:babe
in an address
