Delegating RDNS to DynDNS
« on: June 07, 2009, 08:22:09 AM »

Hi there,

I have a Custom DNS service with DynDNS. I have a working AAAA and MX record for a host. I am trying to get RDNS working now, but I'm not sure how to enter the PTR record in the "Add DNS Record" menu on DynDNS's site.

I have delegated RDNS to DynDNS like so:
RDNS Delegation NS1:     ns2.v6.mydyndns.org
RDNS Delegation NS2:    ns5.mydyndns.org
RDNS Delegation NS3:    ns2.mydyndns.org

Perhaps there's something I'm not catching right?

Any help appreciated.

A lot of these services simply don't let you do "complicated" stuff like that.  If there's no way to add a ip6.arpa domain in the UI, there's probably no way to do it.  At least through their web interface.  I'd call the tech support and ask 'em.

It's one of the reasons I've always preferred to just run my own DNS servers ... I can just edit the named.conf file, etc, and do whatever I want.  :P

You would need to create a whole new zone for the reverse delegation (...ip6.arpa, assuming they allow ip6 reverse zones).  You might want to check out the support docs at:

http://www.dyndns.com/support/kb/reverse_dns_in_custom_dns.html

and

http://www.dyndns.com/support/kb/reverse_dns.html
